China explosion: Live updates as massive blast rocks Tianjin

At least 44 people have been killed after two huge explosions tore through an industrial area in China.The blast happened where toxic chemicals and gas were stored in the northeast Chinese port city of Tianjin.
At least 500 people have been injured. Read below for live updates.

China shuts down super computer used in space building programme
China has been forced to shut down one of its fastest supercomputers after the devastating blaze.
The Tianhe-1 supercomputer, which used to be the fastest computer in the world, is located close to the blast site.
The computer, which is used as part of the country's space programme is located in the National Supercomputing Centre.
The blast forced the ceiling to collapse at the centre leading to concerns for the computer, the South China Morning Post reported.
It is not thought to have been damaged but was shut down as a precaution.

Hundreds have been injured following the blast with over sixty people described as being in a serious condition.
People were queuing to donate blood outside the city’s railway station.

This footage filmed on a drone shows the scale of the devastation at the blast site.
Huge plumes of smoke can be seen billowing from the ground hours after the explosions.
Areas where buildings once stood are now covered in rubble.

Blasts registered as seismic events
Last night’s blasts were so large that they were seen by satellites in space and sent shockwaves through apartment blocks kilometres away in the port city of 15 million people.

 Geological Survey registered the blasts as seismic events.
Vast areas of the port - the 10th largest in the world - were devastated.
Crumpled shipping containers were thrown around like match sticks, hundreds of new cars were torched and port buildings left as burnt-out shells, Reuters witnesses said.

1,000 firefighters sent to the scene
The massive explosions in the warehouse district sent up massive fireballs into the sky.
Twelve of the dead were from among the more than 1,000 firefighters sent to fight the blaze set off by the explosions shortly before midnight, the Tianjin municipal government said.

 It said 520 people were being treated in hospitals, 66 of them with serious injuries. It gave no figure for the missing.

'Is this an atomic bomb'
Witnesses described the devastating moment the explosions happened.
One person inside a building was heard saying: "Our building is shaking. Is this an atomic bomb?"

 Another witness, Guan Xiang, who lives 4 miles from the explosion site, said: "I was sleeping when our windows and doors suddenly shook as we heard explosions outside.
"I first thought it was an earthquake."

It has now been confirmed that at least 44 people have been killed in the blast.
Two huge explosions tore through an industrial area where toxic chemicals and gas were stored in the northeast Chinese port city of Tianjin.

Huge explosions hit an industrial area in the northeast Chinese port city late tonight, killing at least seven people and injuring 180.
The explosions erupted in a shipment of explosives at around 11.30pm local time, triggering a blast wave felt miles away.
Video footage showed flames lighting up the night sky and Chinese news agency Xinhua quoted residents in nearby districts as saying the blast had shattered windows.
The agency said the explosion had ripped through a warehouse storing "dangerous goods".
People had been wounded by broken glass and stones and some were seriously hurt.
There were two explosions within 30 seconds of each other and  about 100 fire trucks had been sent to the scene.
Fireballs from an initial blast had ignited further explosions in premises nearby.

Residents flee scene in dramatic pictures
People have been taking shelter on a street after the huge explosion in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin.
Hundreds of people were wounded tonight 2 by a huge explosion of inflammable material stored in a warehouse.  
The company that runs the warehouse had proper approval for the business, Chinese media reports.

Amazingly Central Television said on its website no deaths had been reported.
There are now around 100 fire trucks at the scene to tackle the blaze.
